Field Trips

Two field trips are scheduled on Monday October 17th. These trips are a half-day each and are organized sequentially so that both together constitute a whole day.  This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy and learn about northern Florida's unique environment and wildlife!  Come and join with fellow OFWIM members on this fun-filled kickoff to the meeting!

Field trips may have a fee associated with them (entrance fee, transportation cost).  A minimum number of people may be required for a field trip to occur.

Monday morning: St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge
About 20 miles south of Tallahassee, 68,000 acres along the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida, This wildlife-rich area contains multiple habitat types, including upland forests, forested swamps, fresh and brackish water marshes, and the wildlife species associated with them.

Monday afternoon: Wakulla Springs State Park
14 miles south of Tallahassee, 2,860 acres.  This is one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs.  Boat tours are offered daily (glassbottom and riverboat tours).  Shallow marshes along the river, old-growth forests, upland hardwood forets and longleaf pine forests are not to be missed.  This is a great place to see limpkins, wading birds, and bald eagles.

If time permits, participants may be able to visit:

Leon Sinks Geological Area
Seven miles south of Tallahassee, this unusual section of the Apalachicola National Forest features more than a dozen dry and wet sinkholes which have formed in longleaf pine flatwoods and hardwood hammock.  Loop trails are about three to four miles long.  The observation platform at Big Dismal Sink offers a breathtaking view of more than 75 different plants cascading down the sink’s steep walls.
